6/24/12 update from Lisa Collins:
Rae has been transferred by animal control on my request to another vets office who is charging only the cost of his care. Thank goodness for caring people who help out for the well being of a little one in need. Thanks to all of you who have donated to help defer the cost. The charge for the previous vet for one month is actually more than the cost for 5 months at the vet where Rae is housed now. Donations can still be made at the PayPal account link or still at Mint Hill Animal Clinic to cover the outstanding cost. Thank you, thank you. Appreciate everything from the donations, emails, calls and support.***************************************************

6/15 UPDATE
The kitten is living happily at the vet's. Over $200 in donations have come in for kitten's 6-month boarding fee. The vet has graciously agreed to accept donations that people call in to her at 704-545-3422. Donations will be applied to the bill which will be due in full when the six months are up (which is about five months from now since kitten has been there since May). See more contact info for the vet at the end of Lisa's letter. Lisa is the kitten's champion who wants to have kitten as permanent member of her family as soon as he is finished with the boarding. Lisa Collins has a PayPal account to which donors may send their contributions. It is lisac@carolina.rr.com (carolina.rr.com). More photos of the kitten will follow. Thanks to all who are helping with this boarding expense!

Here it is Maryann: Please let me know you have received this. Thanks for your help.
On May 23rd, my family heard a kitten crying outside. When we went to investigate, a tiny little beautiful gray and white kitten was near our garage. He was very scared of us and would not get close. At the same time, a raccoon that frequently visits us to eat out of our squirrel feeder, showed up. The raccoon was scared of the kitten and tried to stay it's distance. but the little kitten kept pushing itself on the raccoon as if it thought it was it's mother. The raccoon appears to be a nursing babies as it nipples are large and hanging. After about an hour, we noticed that raccoon was noozling the kitten and trying to gather it close. She never hurt the kitten and was very gentle. The raccoon then tried to take it up the tree by it's mouth unsuccessfully and the kitten then tried to make it up himself. I was afraid as small as he is that he would fall so I grab the little guy. He punctured the palm of his hand with his claw which caused bleeding. I, along with my son who played with the kitten, had to start the course of rabies injections.
After calling my vet for advise, animal control was notified. Unfortunately, animal control wanted both the animals to destroy because of the threat of rabies. Animal control tried to catch the raccoon but was not successful. Since then, we have seen the raccoon several times and she appears fine. Animal control gave us three days to make a decision. Since the kitten was considered wild without vaccinations, we would be forced to submit the kitten to them for euthanization and testing for rabies or we would have to leave the kitten in quarantine under supervisor of a licensed vet for six months at our expense. I have tried every option and am coming up with little hope. My vet has given me the bill of $3500 for six months quarantine. It is the cheapest I can find and not many locations offer this option. Since I have the rabies injection, the vet along with animal control will allow me to visit the kitten as I wish. The vet has told me that he is a little boy about 8 weeks old. He has been wormed and had basic care. They have also cut his nails and are giving him good care.
This baby is so beautiful, He is a loud constant meower which to me is so cute. I would really like to keep him but cannot afford this bill and am now looking at my last resort before making this painful decision to euthanize. I've shed many tears already. I would love to give this little soul a chance. If anyone has a suggestion or solution, it is so appreciated.
